Apollo Performing Arts Center

Aesthetic

The Apollo Performing Arts Center: Victoria Theater Redevelopment Project is a new structure that fits within what was Lowe’s Victoria Theater (designed by architect Thomas Lamb and opened in 1918). Anticipated to open in early 2024, this will be the legendary Apollo’s first physical expansion in its history. The new structure contains a cultural performing arts space, designed by KGA, with two state-of-the-art black box theaters to be known as Apollo’s Victoria Theater and the executive and administrative offices for the Apollo Theater Foundation. The Apollo Performing Arts Center’s Victoria Theater Redevelopment Project is a partnership between the Apollo Theater Foundation, the New York State Economic Development Corporation, and a for-profit real estate developer.

Function

The primary driver for the overall design was flexibility in accommodating a multitude of programming. The two new black box theaters were designed to support a range of cultural programming by incorporating a retractable seating system, flexible AV and lighting system, and acoustic isolation. Additions of new backstage and public amenities will help support the future growth of the facility.
